Hello! My name is Martina Johansson and I’m one of the new bloggers here at the Product Blog together with Cristina Porter. I’ve been sitting next to Rikard Skogberg for the past few years and have followed his work with the blog ever since it was started as the Satio Launch Blog. I’m very excited to cover for him while he is on paternity leave and I’ll do my best to keep you well informed about our products and services.

Some Changes Ahead

I have been working with this blog for almost two years now. It all started with me and my colleague Gustaf thinking we should do something special for the launch of the Sony Ericsson Satio. On the 7th of September 2009 the first post of the Satio Launch Blog was posted. After that we had some really nice times with reporting on the development of Satio up until launch. Because of the limited subject, one model only, and the huge excitement for the camera features of Satio it created a lot of interest and a quite tight community around it.

When Satio was launched the blog then changed into the Sony Ericsson Product Blog and got much wider to cover all of our products. The amount of visitors also boomed which made the comments section change as well. Because of the very heavy traffic and engagement among the comments the comments section changed from being almost a discussion forum into more of a traditional comments section. We also had some tough times with the more technical community during our first year with Android. All that feedback we got back then, even though it felt hard at times, was very important to us. I fully believe that we have been able to learn and change fast from that. My interaction with our developers has been taking lots of my time and I really feel that the feedback from you here have made a difference. A difference for our products, our development but also on the view of consumer needs and the importance of super user perception from our side.

I’ve almost felt like a representative for the tech-savvy consumers into our company and it has been a great journey leaving a feeling of being able to make a difference.
That said there are still of course areas where we still can and need to improve, I think there always will be. Therefore your continuous feedback is just as important now and in the future so keep it coming!

Things are about to change around here though.

First of all this blog will soon go through a change in look&feel and the comments system will be updated with support for thumbs-ups, threads of comments etc. Especially the revamp of the comments section will hopefully even further enhance the experience and the quality in the comments section. The re-design of the look of the blog is also a good improvement where you can look at the redesigned developer world page to get an idea on what it will look like. During the work with this redesign there will probably be some down-time though but hopefully not too much.

Secondly it’s now time for me to take some time off. My second daughter is now almost 1 year old and it’s time for me to take some parental leave to spend quality time with her and her older sister. Don’t worry though, there will be other bloggers taking care of this space and I’m sure they will do a great job until my return.

Being as interested as I am in our products and the mobile industry at large I’m sure I will have a hard time disconnecting fully though and I will keep track of things happening. Who knows, I might show up here in the comments section from time to time also :-)

We have lots of exciting new products that will start shipping during this summer and fall and it will be a very different experience for me trying to keep track of that a little bit from the side rather then being in the very center of it all.

So, final blog post for a while, checking out!

Have a great summer all!

Sustainable Phones

The subjects on this blog are often technical but sometimes it can be quite refreshing that there’s more to mobile devices than just the techie stuff :-)

Just recently O2 in the UK launched an initiative to build awareness and improve on sustainability called Think big (not all pages are accessible outside the UK, sorry). One part of this initiative is something they call Eco rating which is very well described in this document for those who want to learn more. In this Eco rating they have ranked 65 mobile phones from 6 different manufacturers and I’m really glad to see the Sony Ericsson Elm at the very top with a rating of 4.3 out of 5! It’s of course also very nice to see that 4 out of the top 10 models are Sony Ericsson phones with X10 mini, X10 mini pro and Zylo getting the second highest rating of 4.0.

As you might know we at Sony Ericsson have a long history around sustainability and substance control for our portfolio and have since quite a while decided to offer some products under the GreenHeart brand.

This brand is used for those of our products that carry the torch in including the latest “features” when it comes to minimizing the negative impact on our environment.

Some of the things included under the Greenheart proposition so far are:

  •           High efficiency chargers with minimal standby loss.
  •           Minimized box sizes and packaging material
  •           Recycled plastics
  •           Waterborne paint
  •           E-manual to minimize the amount of paper in the box
  •           “Eco-inspiring” applications
  •           PC software in the phone instead of a CD

Our goal is that after introducing these features in the GreenHeart phones make them spread into other parts of our portfolio. A recent example is that all X10 mini and X10 mini pro sold in the world have the new GreenHeart charger included in the box. The plan is for this to continue so that the core of our next-year portfolio meets the GreenHeart requirements.

Read more about this at our GreenHeart blog dedicated to these subjects, thanks to Maria, Mats and Daniel in our Sustainability Team!

Feel free to ask any kind of questions you might have around sustainability – either here or at the dedicated GreenHeart blog - they really know a lot about these things and I’ve learnt a lot from them!

Manish – Mr. 2000 Comments

I’m still amazed by the engagement found among you the readers of this blog. Since it started as the Satio Launch Blog in September last year many of you have been very active among the comments which really is what brings this blog to life. Of course the comment section is a place for you to ask us questions and let us know what you think about things and we really try to keep up and answer everything that we can. However some of you have really taken the comments section to another level by being there on a regular basis, helping us answering questions, engaging in discussions and sharing interesting finds from other places.

I can’t really thank you enough for that but at least I can highlight it from time to time with some examples :-)

So here we go,

Manish has been here among the comments since his first comment on September 9 2009 and recently he passed the 2000 comments mark! (That’s over 10 comments per day in average!) Truly amazing! To highlight this I contacted him with a few questions for this post. Here he is: Manish!

And here are the questions and his answers:

-          Which is the comment you are most proud of?
This one goes really difficult for me and now when i’ve reached 2000 comments on this blog it’s even more difficult for me. But after a lot of thought, i guess my first comment, the comment as an applicant for the Satio Test Pilot! That was the first time i came across this blog and since then it’s been real good time for me. And m really proud of it. It has been a real great community and thank you everyone who has ever been a part of it. :)

-          Who will be the first to pass 3000 comments?
Guess the one who buys a X10 and falls in love with it. Practically, it could be anyone, if you announce some reward program for it. :) Although, would love to see you at that landmark.

-          What phone do you use at the moment?
At, the moment i use Sony Ericsson W700i. My First ever phone that i bought, when i first got into the college. :) I still love it!

-          What phone do you dream of? Hmmm.. X10 with no second thought or even first! ( I guess any regular user of the blog would guess that. :) ) Although, a few years back i wanted SE to develop the ‘rumored W990‘, so that i could get my hands on it! :D

Update from Barcelona

Voilà, a belated update from Barcelona (yesterday was a very hectic day so we performed poorly on the blog update side…).  As you all know by now, last night we announced Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro as well as Vivaz pro. More info about these products can be found in our press room:  http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/corporate/press/pressreleases/latestnews. The feed-back at the press conference was just great and we are really excited about putting these products to market during Q2 this year (yes, I know, that’s pretty soon :-) ). Today I have been spending quite some time at our demo stand at the Mobile World Congress, were we demo the new products, if you’re here please drop by and say Hello. Below is a short video (shot with a Vivaz) from our stand in hall 8.

As some of you have already seen we have a set up a specific blog for the MWC that will run this week. So for regular updates on what is happening in Barcelona this week, please visit: http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/mobileworldcongress/
