Since both X10 mini and X10 mini pro include support for office e-mail through Exchange Active Sync most of my colleagues are using push e-mail in their phones. Unlike the X10 the mini products however don’t have an included document viewer out of the box. Therefore I’ve gotten many questions around which app to download to do that.
There are many available but since I’m in Sweden where we don’t have paid applications on Android Market yet they mostly are limited trials.
However we’ve now made a free alternative available on PlayNow!
The app is the same that is included in the X10 and it’s called “OfficeSuite Viewer”. It’s developed by one of our partners called MobiSystems and more information can be found at their product page for this app. In short it’s an office document viewer that handles the following formats: DOC, DOCX, TXT, XLS, XLSX, CSV, PPT, PPTX, PPS, PPSX and PDF which should cover most needs out there. It is only a viewer though and if you want to be able to create or edit office documents you need to buy their Pro-version which you can find more information on from within the viewer.
You should find the app under the productivity category on PlayNow in your X10 mini or X10 mini pro. Remember that even though the application as such is free of charge it will be a few MB of data to download so make sure you have some kind of data plan with your network operator!
UPDATE: There have been some issues with the app not being available on PlayNow in all countries and there are also customized phones out there that doesn’t include PlayNow. We have a solution for this – MobiSystems have been kind enough to also put it on their site for direct download. So if you can’t download it from PlayNow you can now direct your phones browser to: http://mobisystems.com/se/officesuite/ and download it there. However – for that you need to work you need to enter Settings -> Applications and there enable “Unknown sources”. This could lower your phone security so remember to disable it after the installation is done.
I’ve only tested it briefly yet but it seems to do the trick just fine with the files I’ve tested so far.
So for you out there who have missed the possibility to open and read e-mail attachements on your mini – Please try it out and let me know what you think!
Good news! Our Xperia™ X10 mini has been awarded “European Mobile Phone 2010-2011” by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA). It has been chosen for its unique combination of compact size and excellent performance with a comprehensive range of features. The jury singled out the Xperia™ X10 mini as their number one mobile phone due to its style and design features and the easy way you can use it to communicate with just one hand. We feel very honored since the jury consisted of editors from 50 special interest magazines across Europe.
Over time, the relationship people have with their mobile phones has changed significantly. Most of us have moved away from using them as pure communication tools to creating a more personalised entertainment experience. As a result, mobile phones were growing in size. In Sony Ericsson we have identified the need for a compact and powerful mobile phone with all the benefits that come from a smartphone platform. It feels great that this is recongnized by the industry as well as our customers. As some of you remember, this recent accolade actually follows the earlier received prestigious Red Dot Product Design Award 2010. Please join us celebrating!
Hi,
For US based readers I would like to inform that Xperia™ X10 will be launched by AT&T, available in stores August 15th.
I have been out here in US for some time now preparing for the launch and have received very positive feedback from our partners and consumers. Looking forward to seeing US consumers using Xperia™ X10.
Sumit
