As promised, the first full software update for the Xperia X2 (in older posts on the Xperiancer blog I’ve called this MR1) is now available. Timing on the update is different for certain markets but many of the software versions are available now and I expect the rest to be available by the end of the week. The update will be distributed through the Update Service client found at www.sonyericsson.com/update.
This new software is a healthy step forward – not only does it bring performance and stability improvements throughout the device but it also introduces several new features as well.
Here’s a list of highlights:
- MR1 is built on a new core platform release from Microsoft including a newer version of IE6
- Stability improvements are everywhere with focus on SlideView, Panel manager and TileWave
- Performance improvements focused on rotation and touch performance, the camera, web browsing, the software keyboard and audio streaming
- New features are added like FM radio, Video calling, Auto-lock and Fast GPS which allows for a faster first fix to the GPS signal
- SlideView 2.0 gives better usability throughout with a fresh design; and new actions are build in like new/reply/delete/edit capabilities in messaging and calendar. Music scrolling/searching and the mini-player have also been enhanced
- The new dialer took a big step forward with four easy buttons giving easy access to the dial-pad, favorites, call activity and contacts. We increased the target hit area in contacts for finger friendliness and added user friendly redial functionality
- Based on feedback from you, we really worked hard on the software keyboard (XT9) by improving speed and touch responsiveness

UPDATE: Please disregard the posts from “Aaron” formerly found on this blog and picked up in other forums stating Sony Ericsson is abandoning the X2 – this is simply untrue. The MR2 software release is still on track for May and will bring increased performance and usability to your X2. It’s too bad that “Aaron” created that buzz out there but this Aaron is still here and listening to you.

This phone is horrible!!
It has A LOT of bugs but ones like SD card corrupt, constant freezes which require removing the battery and SMS notification are just NOT acceptable in ANY phone, not the $600 one. Also internal GPS and camera are just terrible.
But I was hoping… and waiting for fixes and there they were!! MR1 and then MR2. And what? NOTHING’s changed!! It’s still the most unstable phone ever. It’s actually made me annoyed almost every time I used it.
So I decided to SOLD IT and never buy any SE product again. Now with the new phone I feel great :]

I have to mention that I had T640, K750, K800i, P1i, another P1i. All were good phones.
XperiaX2 is TERRIBLE! A SHAME FOR SE!!
I tried to return it after 2 weeks, but Vodafone Romania didn´t accept it.(!!!) So I throwed a lot of money out of the window.
I have had winmo devices since they first came out, mis-use my arse.
I know how to use it, and what apps work perfect on any other handset, so ruling the apps i use out.
Auto rotate is non existant, there are still memory card issues, the device still freezes, etc..
ALL problems are there after a hard reset with NOTHING additional installed.

Aaron, I think It´s time you searched for a new job ´cause you are really something. That comment you placed here is totally out of place. THE XPERIA X2 IS NOT A FLAGSCHIP…IT´S A LAGSHIP. I had windows mobile since it exists and no other phone was souch a pain in my but. Really, it is the worst. Got myself a Nexus One, that is a phone. SE has lost it.
I don’t know if Aaron wrote that comment, but in my particular case, I won’t buy any other SE product again. I paid a high price for a useless phone. I will look on HTC or Mac next time, at least these companies are not releasing updates for correcting major issues in their phones 9 months after launching a product.
I have upgraded to X2 from X1 in February 2010. Since then, this phone is with SE service center. Recently (in May) they upgrade the firmware & hardware (new phone) and returned the phone to me. I have to say that I have completely wasted my hard earned money. I spend most of my time removing the battery (to reset) till today. It’s quite embarrassing sometimes. I’m now at the juncture of where I don’t really care if SE still hard at work trying to fix these issues. I wish SE revenue to drop significantly and they have to stop making and launching phones that never work at the first place. Don’t buy SE phone.
This is the first SE phone I’ve bought, and to say this phone is one of the worst phones I have used will still be an understatement. I blew 6 bills expecting this to be a nice phone, but it turned out to be an utter obsolete device that can’t even compare with other high-end devices in the same price range. I AM DISAPPOINTED SE! The boasted specs are good, but it has WAY TOO MANY GLITCHES (IE. THE EFFING MEMORY CARD GLITCH AND CONSTANT FREEZING AND LAGGING)I lost all my pictures I took on my road trip thanks to the glitch. Thank you SE. This is a piece of sh.it phone that should never have been released on the market. It’s a disgrace.

Absolute piece of shit. The phone, I mean. Come to think of it, so are Sony Ericsson, so is the the SEUS software. What a waste of money.
It is very true that the X2 cannot be compared with X1 software and behavior. In my personal case, after two upgrades, my phone is fortunately working fine (no freezes, although my SD card is not found very oftenly in my phone explorer). Battery darins very fast. Auto rotation is definitely a ston ein the boot (sometimes work sometimes doesn’t work, and if it works, takes more that 15 sec to react). Is there anybody that may use the videocall option. Does the settings depend on the service provider or is it an automatic setting given by windows mobile. My phone runs on Edge because 900mhz is not the 3G frecuency in America. I have not bought this phone yet, but am really looking into it. I know a lot of your comments aren’t the greatest about the phone, but I am upgrading from a sony ericsson W810i, it is probably about 5 years old now and I still love it, it’s slow and it freezes up a lot, and the battery life sucks, but I don’t care. It is no where near a smart phone, I cancelled the internet on my current phone after about a month of having it and I’m not complaining. What I’m trying to say is I like the X2, it’s slick and has internet and a QWERTY keyboard, I don’t care if it freezes, I’m used to it with my current phone, I’m just looking for an upgrade. Thank you for all your advice, but I still want to give it a try.
I have been looking around various forums, it appears that there are a lot of people who have no problems with the phone, except the little things like autorotate.
And there are a lot of people who have nothing but problems.
From what i can see it makes no difference what rom version they are running, so i am wondering if there could be a hardware issue somewhere?
There seems to be no middle ground, either you have nothing but problems, or you have no problems.
What do you all think? could it be a hardware fault rather than software?

Also, i don’t agree that there is no middle ground. If you search for the comments made by the user “aka Baby” at GSMArena, you will see that i have issues with the dialer. I also have an issue with the Clock. There is also the LEd notification issue, etc. These issues notwithstanding, i’m using the phone, and i love it largely. I’m now only hoping the SE releases a new upgrade software that solves the remaining problems with the phone. Lest i forget, remember that many people have also complained about the lack of rSAP.:)
When i say no problems, i meant to say no problems that stop you using the phone, led notifications would be nice, but not what i would call a major problem that makes the phone unusable like constant freezing etc..
From what i see it is only a few people that have complained many times about rsap, another minor issue that would be nice but does not stop you using the phone, you can still use the bluetooth to link to the cars system, just not the remote sim part.

Thanks for the clarification. However, from my point of view, some of the minor issues that SE might classify as “nice to have” could be of immense importance to the users who want them.
For instance, in my case, i migrated from my SE P990 phone, not because it wasn’t working, but because i wanted something that would be more modern, having animated screen transitions, plus all the things i enjoyed on the P990. So you can imagine how frustrated i became when i couldn’t find an easy way to copy a phone number from the “Calls History” in the Dialer and paste it in an SMS or a Task organizer…It was as if i had spend a huge sum of money to buy a new phone, yet retrogressed…And this minor feature ‘copy number’ is on the P990 and P910. Having it introduced into the X’s dialer, to me, is not “nice to have” but a “must.”
Another issue is that the Clock always keeps my city Accra one hour behind London which is wrong. Granted, it does not stop the phone from working, but it looks like a bug that must be removed.
These are just a few of my minor issues that SE might classify as “nice to have” but i would classify as “must have.”
Anyway, i am a layman so maybe i’m looking at the issue from a wrong perspective.

Nice to have are at the moment just nice to have to me. But they had better be sorted in the next update, and there had better be a next update. I am already never going to buy another SE phone, but with the amount of money this phone cost, i want to be using it and having all features working, even the small ones like led notifications. I have already been without the phone for over a month waiting for it to be repaired after SEUS messed it up. I presume SE do not test the software on the phone, but simulated on there pc’s under perfect working conditions, if they tested on the phone itself it would be noticable immediately that there was something not right.
hey i was upset my X2 but when i did the update itz the phon dat everyone would like to have.now i call X2 a real phon. its a great feeling to have such a superb phon. no worries……

FIX A LOT OF ISSUES FIRST!!!!!
Please resolve the issues I raised over and over to your Accredited Service Centers here in the Philippines namely MemoXpress and Semicon. I already escalated a lot of issues but they were not able to fix all of it and they just replaced my phone with new Xperia X2 phone not just once but twice. Unfortunately, some issues are still open and haven’t fixed yet. See issues and recreational steps below.
1. Backlight is ON even the phone is turned OFF
Keep open any media file (i.e. picture, video, so on) >> Turn the phone off >> Backlight is still on
2. Battery is drained when the battery is removed and inserted it again
Turn the phone on >> Turn it off >> Remove battery >> Insert battery >> Turn the phone on >> Battery is drained
3. BUG: Option button is enabled but no option/s is/are displayed
Click Start >> Settings >> Home >> Items (Tab) >> Date >> Options >> No option/s is/are displayed
4. Low Performance! Always hang up!
I’ve tried the step below and the phone hung up.
Try to play any videos >> Do not close the Windows Media Player >> Open other application (i.e. Play Now) >> Close the recently opened application >> Windows Media Player is displayed >> The phone hang up

But as early as April 23, 2010 I reported at MemoXpress SM-Megamall and MemoXpress Robinsons-Pioneer that there were problems with the phone. Since then, I haven’t been using my phone anymore!
I’m really really tired of complaining those issues over and over. You made me wear out! Please resolve or fix those issues I raised. Otherwise, here are your options:
1. Replace my Xperia X2 with higher model. Adding Php 5,000 ++ is not an issue! I can add extra money but I need working model!
2. Lastly, return my money back and I will return your phone with all everything came up with it even its paper bag!

well after da update the cell is good.. bt still nt the best… can something be done for the sms notifications as it is really really annoying…
and ya.. my memory card just dissappears sometimes and when it detects sometimes da data stored in da card is nt visible bt memory space is still in use…
n der is absolutely no way i can format my card… wid my cell… i want to format my card wid my cell.. if possible plz get an update dat feature…

My son bought this phone against my knowledge, had i heard these comments i would’nt buy it.
WHAT A PAIN, hours and hours trying to fix it improve it, nothing,the EXTRA micro 8gb sd card THAT I BOUGHT it is a mystery,can’t figure out how to make work, get message, “your storage is full programs won’t work.
For the price my son paid it is just horrible, i have my own LG touch, so easy to use ,fast get everything tv, email, news, no problem, this one freezes, slow, SONYERICCSON let their name in the mud with this one.
I will never buy their brand again for sure.HTC ,APPLE , MOTOROLA are there with cheaper and times better phones.

This phone is a piece of crap, to think that a sold my HTC Touch pro II
. Should have kept regardless of its scratches and dents. SE should discontinue the sale of the phone, refund us and apologize customers for selling this phone in the first place.
My T68i was quicker than this phone.
This phone DOES NOT WORK on T-Mobile 3G Network(USA). The network doesn’t support it. NO USE. Except anyone have any suggestion. Now I have to return it.
SE CEO should really see all these messages.
SE should really work hard to resolve all the X2 issues or make a free one-to-one exchange for newer SE product like X10, if X10 is stable. Most X2 user really felt cheated by buying the phone with so many instabilities, eg. SD card issue, hang issue, etc.
Felt so sad SE is not taking customer feelings seriously.
Sony Ericsson, please do a global recall for X2 as there are simply too many issues, especially stability issues.
Even my old Nokia 6210 is so much more stable than a “smart” phone like X2.

I had Video calling problem in my Xperia phone. But i Upgrade windows from Sony ericsson site (down loaded the file and did it as per instruction)and now it works vedio
New video calling option came to menu after upgrade..
Follow following steps.
1.Down load upgrade file
2.Run the programme
if phone didnt connect, try other USB port ( I had that prob)
3. follow instructions.
Simple task.. It will work. 100% sure.

since when I try to take a picture nothing happens and now it looks like I’ve lost all my data on the micro-sd but the space it is still taken in it, I checked is I was the only one with problems here.
well, apparently I’m in good company.
I hope, as I read from some of your comment, the phone at some point will read the micro-sd again and I’ll be made able to save those data somewhere else. it would be bad enough to have lost all the pics and videos.
in any case, I loved the old x1, despite the keyboard sometimes wasn’t that reactive. with x2 we’ve got a great keyboard but the rest is definitely not satisfying.
hope this is only a big software problem and they’ll fix it asap. this phone costed a fortune!
X2 is a nice mobile just needs a bit of tweeking to work as u want … check out forum for the tweaks u need.

i changed from Swedish to English system , fixed the sd card corruption, modified the accelerometer settings to flip some app without opening keyboard.. all from reading post on the forum…

I have x2 phone and there are lot of bugs in this phone. I has update my phone with your latest software release also. But still there are lot of problems. One of the major problems in my phone is my data storage card will automatically get deleted. There are no any data in my card. So we lost our valuable data and software install in storage card. Other major problem in x2 it is very very slow performance. When we compare to other brands (Samsung omini) x2 is the worse phone i had ever seen. Please concentrate on this and we will hope a another update very soon and hope these bugs may fix from that update. And also we love sony erricson. Because they trying to give best phone experience to us. We know that. May be x2 was one of your failure product. Please do something.

i bought a x2 phone! x2 is the worse phone i had ever bought! im using sony ericsson phones since 2004! t65 , t300 ,k300 ,k510 , k750 and t650 those phones were grate but x2 phone!!!!!! ##@@$%%% hmm! if u cant make a good windows software for this phone then make a symbian o/s! like vivas!

X2 was my first SE phone… Guess what, within a week I returned it to Service Center due to hardware failure; Slow, Hang, Fast Battery consumption, and high temp. They replaced it with a new one.. Still, it was damn slow! So I bought X10i and gave my old, worthless X2 to my friend. X10 is still outdated as of this writing. I love SE design but if you’re looking for up-to-date and high powered phone, you are in a wrong web page.
interested in its feature I bought x2 di Jakarta on Juli 2010. I surprised to this gadget, very bad, I had never buy a worst phone like this. Hard qwerty keyboard, hard touch screen, too weak battery, and too weak speaker etc. I complained to customer service at WTC surabaya but the result just make me upset. I moved to SE service center. After complained at this center and they done to upgrading the software, my x2 run better than before. Now I use x2 as my second phone, it is not bad phone but I still prefer E72.
Frankly speaking I never have problem again after grade to winmo 6.5.3. Even I upgrade it by my self not through SE centre. I read in various forum that to make X2 runs better, just removed unnecessary panel. Like growing panel, night and day, youtube. and I did it…. voila… till now… I love this phone…
