Xperia at Microsoft PDC 2008

image.axd Throughout this year’s professional developers conference in LA, a group of 7 Swedish bloggers have been using X1 handsets to blog live from the event. Their collective offerings can be digested (if you can read Swedish) over at the pellesoft blog. There are also, a couple of webcasts talking about the Xperia SDK (again, only for Swedish speakers.)

According to the website, the PDC (professional developers’ conference,) is Microsoft’s premier gathering of leading-edge developers and architects. It’s a major event and was the setting for the launches of both windows XP and Vista. They will be blogging up until the end of the event tomorrow and if you speak Swedish I recommend you check it out.

The two preliminary reviews we linked to last week are now full blown, in-depth trials of the phone, you can read both the MoDaCo review and the one at Tracyandmatt.co.uk by following the links. Both have some great things to say about the phone (and a few criticisms of course.) Steve (the tracyandmatt reviewer even went so far as to say that the phone might become “one of the all time classic devices.”)

If you have any questions for either of the reviewers, you can leave them here and I will try to get the answers collated into another post.

The guys over at Spb have released the first full version of their Spb Mobile Shell panel. The official announcement is here. Importantly, they’ve also released a number of screen shots to show you all how it looks. (the pics are on our images page but if you don’t have the required flash player check out our flickr stream)

I’ve just installed my version and, as someone who hasn’t used Spb much before, I’m mightily impressed. It’s quick to load, easy to operate, it looks great and it’s free – so it ticks all the boxes as far as I’m concerned.

You can download it here from the Sony Ericsson site.

Update: pocket pc thoughts is also covering this, read more here.

Update 2: Just had an email from Yaroslav Goncharov, the product manager for Spb Mobile Shell. In his words:

“Spb Mobile Shell is a means to a de-cluttered device and finger-friendly menus and an immensely popular program. We think that the custom Spb Mobile Shell panel goes especially well with the Xperia X1. The Panels interface feels like it was created with the developers in mind, from the start. It was a very good decision to reuse the standard interface of Today Plug-ins, which makes for a comfortable application migration, taking up minimum resources and leading to a good ROI in development. The panels are absolutely an exceptional opportunity for developers, especially taking into account the X1′s on-device portal, which will help to further promote quality Windows Mobile software in this competitive market.”

New version of the SDK now available

We’ve had a great reception to the first version of the Xperia SDK, in the first couple of days it was downloaded literally thousands of times and the initial feedback we’ve had has been really positive. In this update, we’ve added support for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 development environment and the Microsoft Vista OS as well as added key mapping support to the device emulator and the testing and debugging is easier.

On top of that, we are releasing the SDK as Beta and taking a more open and agile approach so we can dramatically increase the rate of innovation and deliver more of the features requested by the developer community sooner.

There’s still plenty of time for you to submit panels for the 2008 content awards and we’re particularly interested in hearing from people who can use the panels interface to improve the usability of a developed application.

You can download the new SDK here, and I’d very much recommend that you upgrade if you are already running the previous one.

Please keep the ideas coming and thank you for your involvement so far!
